Life Drawing Week 12

Final life drawing session. I absolutely loved the iterative process of weekly drawing and learning, it provided so much joy and grounding over the last few months.

Life Drawing Week 11

Today we studied hair. I find it challenging and often don’t like the result when I draw hair. However, I was happy with one of them- the blonde 60’s woman’s hair. I think it’s because it had a softer, illuminated look. (image 3)

Life Drawing Week 10

Vilppu drawing session, leg anatomy and longer self portraits (emphasis on tonal). Will be doing more of this type of session in the future!

Life Drawing Week 9

Today we looked at the skeletal and muscular structure of the arms. They are surprisingly complex! It was helpful doing a quick draft of the Bargue drawing to get a feel for the shape and outline before going into the final copy, which uses negative space in a really amazing way.

Life Drawing Week 8

Today I really enjoyed the slower process of drawing to a higher finish. It was interesting to see master drawings from casts and copy some feature studies. I especially like the work of Vanderpol.

Life Drawing Week 7

This week we worked in pen, which forced us to be bold and commit to lines and hatching. I feel like I’m starting to see some more confidence in my figure drawing due to our anatomy lessons, which is very exciting. Finally, I sketched some flowers that were given by family and friends when I…

Life Drawing Week 6

This week was so fun for so many reasons- I absolutely loved the pillow drawing exercise we did in class. Using toned paper for the first time, I enjoyed how the midtones were already filled in, so adding white highlights was much more intentional. I have included a few quick sketches of classmates we drew…

Life Drawing Week 5

I really enjoyed tonal drawing for the first time, still life and also Boucher master copies. After our front torso anatomy class, I made some drawings from life using a light setup with more shadow contrast. The aim is to become more familiar with anatomy and light in order to start making more exaggerated, gestural…

Life Drawing Week 4

Currently loving: ‘Figure Drawing For All It’s Worth’, Andrew Loomis. It’s been one month of drawing! In class, we I enjoyed examining the ribcage as a form with all its ridges, curves and flat planes. We have also reached my nemesis, facial features. However, Jessica’s tutorials always make it less daunting by providing a starting…

Life Drawing Week 3

Hands and feet… I have a newfound respect for these evasive forms. I find Michelangelo’s depictions of hands and feet very beautiful and love how he can exaggerate the features once he has mastered them. Drawing the hands within a mitten shape and using straight line angles was a very helpful starting point!

Life Drawing Week 2

Jessica’s Tip of the Week: when drawing the head and face, start with brow and face centre line, before rounding the back of the head. This way, the head tilt is already determined. This week we studied the head, its form and gesture. I never expected that studying the skull would help in understanding the…

Life Drawing… Week 1

I’m really keen to learn some figure-drawing skills for the first time, with a focus on developing a sense of gesture and movement! This week, we observed ‘landmarks’ and basic figure anatomy, using our pencil as an extension of our arm to create loose, gestural forms on paper. In reflection: this new approach gave me…
